He is the brother of the economist Jagdish Bhagwati and the neurosurgeon S.N. Bhagwati. He is married to Prabhavati (née Shethji) and the couple have three daughters, Parul, Pallavi, Noopur and Sonali.[1] Pallavi is a senior partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, a leading Indian law firm.He also rescued by advocating for Smt.  Justice Bhagwati began his career practicing at the Bombay High Court.[1] In July 1960, he was appointed a judge of the Gujarat High Court. In September 1967, he was appointed the Chief Justice of that court. On two occasions, he acted (briefly) asGovernor of Gujarat (7 December 1967 to 25 December 1967 and 17 March 1973 to 3 April 1973[2] In July 1973, he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. In August 1985, he became Chief Justice of India. As a supreme court judge, Bhagwati introduced the concepts of public interest litigation and absolute liability to the Indian judicial system. He is therefore held, along with Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer, to have pioneered judicial activism in the country.
Talking about his interview given to "The Tribune" during 2011 this is what he stated about Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Forty-two years. I first met him during my term as chief justice of the Gujarat High Court. The day was May 15, 1968. Bhagwan was in Ahmedabad, so I requested him to visit my residence. And he did. He stayed there for an entire day and that one day changed my life (weeps). I was so overwhelmed, I became his devotee forever. He accepted me and since then he has guided and inspired me throughout life.

Every single one of my judgments has been guided and inspired by a divine hand (weeps). I believe in two entities, Krishna and Sathya Sai. I am not a devotee but a lover of Krishna. People may call me mad, and yes, this is madness. The madness of love. At the age of 11, I would run outside the house and weep for Krishna. As a professional, each time I would sit down to write a judgment at 5 'o'clock in the morning, I was only writing what my god dictated. Bhagwan held my hand as I put pen to paper.

Everything that I have achieved in respect of the law, and people say I have achieved a lot, is owing to the guidance and inspiration of Sathya Sai Baba. There is no doubt on that score.
In one of the very important issue of Sanathan Sarathi during May-2011 this is what he stated besides giving a thorough insight on Bhagwan's work with wisdom...We should never forget that Bhagwan(Sathya Sai) has assured us that he will be back within us after 8 years in another form.
May his Divine Soul rest at Thy Lotus Feet
